Most cells contained within our bodies are not “ourselves”. They are microorganisms that live in our gut. These are essential for digestion, immunity, and nutritional health. Recent research has begun to shine a light on the importance of the microbiome not just for gastrointestinal health but for total body health. We will discuss general concepts about the microbiome, illustrate the influence of the microbiome on multiple body systems and diseases, and explore ways in which the microbiome can be altered or adjusted to improve body health.
