The Reformation and Counter-Reformation, the religious schism between northern and southern Europe, is still in progress to this day. In this highly illustrated course, we trace the history of the Reformation and its historical origins. Geopolitical events including wars, mass migrations, and political shifts punctuated these unstable centuries.
The Catholic Church fought back with a counter-reformation using repression, reform, and the arts. Ignited by the Renaissance, art, architecture, sculpture, glass, and literature were deployed on a lavish scale to reinforce the Catholic position, largely unanswered from the Protestant side. Baroque art became richer, more expressive, more spectacular, and more intricate. Complex messages were woven into structures, art, and the written word, all to support the Catholic perspective on the contentious issues with the Protestants.
This highly illustrated course will be enriched by examples from the Ringling Collection in Sarasota, with a large collection of Reformation and Counter-Reformation-related art. There will be opportunities to tour the Ringling galleries with the course leader.
