“A Whale of a Day! - Massachusetts Right Whale Day
Massachusetts Right Whale Day offers an opportunity to celebrate these majestic creatures while raising awareness about their endangered status. This family-friendly event is open to all and provides a unique chance to learn how individuals can get involved in marine conservation.
Guests will enjoy activities from event partners, including Oceana, the New England Coastal Wildlife Alliance, Sound Explorations, and Amy Estes, author of Whale Poop; a screening of the musical storybook short film, Right Whale Wrong Letter; and see the newest technology to protect Right Whales, including on-demand lobster gear from Sea Mammal Education Learning Technology Society (SMELTS), and acoustic monitoring systems, weak ropes and contrivances from MA Fisheries & Wildlife.
Bow Seat Ocean Awareness Program and Massachusetts Marine Educators will display North Atlantic right whale themed art contest entries, and Matt Delaney, the Pembroke citizen who worked with his local congressman, Rep. Josh Cutler, to get H.3869 passed establishing Massachusetts Right Whale Day, will give remarks.
Copies of “30 Years and Beyond”, a report that highlights the ocean conservation work funded through the purchase of Right Whale license plates through the MA Environmental Trust, will also be available.
The celebration is part of the New Bedford Whaling Museum’s “Maritime Makers & Marine Marvels,” a week-long program of hands-on activities and immersive learning for all ages during April school vacation week, Monday, April 21 to Sunday, April 27, 2025. It is included with Museum admission.
