Two stellar musicians with ties to Wisconsin will grace the historic stage at the Jazz Gallery Center for the Arts on Saturday, February 8.
Renowned jazz saxophonist, composer and teacher Dennis Mitcheltree was born and raised in Wisconsin and currently resides in the Los Angeles area.
His partner for this special performance will be pianist, recording artist and current Director of Jazz Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison Johannes Wallman.
Performing as a duo, the Mitcheltree/Wallman show will come just one day after the release of their brand-new album, “Holding Space.” Recorded in July 2023 at the Hamel Music Center in Madison, the album features all original compositions by Mitcheltree and Wallmann.
The musical partnership of pianist Wallmann and tenor saxophonist Mitcheltree began in 1997 in New York City where Wallmann, fresh out of graduate school and starting his professional career in the “Jazz Capital of the World,” was invited by the already established Mitcheltree to join his quartet for a two-week tour of the Midwest.
Twenty-eight years later, Wallmann and Mitcheltree’s collaborations include six quartet tours of the U.S., two duo and quartet tours of Germany, countless additional performances in venues throughout North America, three albums led by Mitcheltree and one led by Wallmann, as well as many joint educational and festival workshops in New York, California and throughout the Midwest.
Drawing on the near-telepathic chemistry Wallmann and Mitcheltree have honed over the span of their 28 years of musical kinship, this promises to be a magical night of acoustic jazz at the historic Jazz Gallery Center for the Arts in Riverwest.
