Back by popular demand, Richmond Times-Dispatch political columnist Jeff Schapiro will add his witty and wise analysis to Virginia's significant election results. Virginia is the new bellwether state for trends in national politics and state and local issues. All eyes were on the Commonwealth on the night of November 8. Jeff has covered campaigns and government in Virginia for nearly 45 years. Before joining the Times-Dispatch in 1987, he was a politics and policy reporter in the Richmond bureau of United Press International and for Virginia Business, a monthly magazine. He came to Richmond in 1979 following work with newspapers in Louisiana and New Jersey. A graduate of Georgetown University, Jeff has the great distinction of contributing 30 years to The Economist, the highly regarded British news magazine covering Southern politics and culture. Since 2001, he has reviewed state government and politics weekly for Virginia Public Radio. You can also follow him on Twitter and Facebook. Also, during our December meeting, we will announce the recipient of the 2023 Richmond First Good Government and Leadership Award. This award has been given 45 times in our 104-year history to outstanding forerunners in our community. The last was presented in 2019 before COVID-19. Please arrive around 11:30 a.m. to check in, with lunch served at noon. The program begins at 12:30 p.m. and will conclude around 1:30 p.m. The meeting will be held at the Willow Oaks Country Club, Richmond, VA. About Richmond First Today, the organization strongly supports regional good-government initiatives, such as fair, non-partisan redistricting for Virginia elections. Monthly programs inform members of issues central to the success of the city and the surrounding counties in the metropolitan region. Speakers include area government officials; educators; candidates for office; specialists in transportation, economic development, tourism, and regional cooperation; health care and non-profit service providers; authorities on housing and challenges of the homeless; and political analysts, among other metro region leaders.
