The Rhode Island Wind Ensemble will make its annual return to Newport’s Winter Festival this year at the Newport Marriott Hotel on Sunday evening, February 18th at 7:00 pm in “New England State of Mind,” a benefit concert for the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Center of Newport. Admission is free, and all donations will go directly to the MLK Center.
About the Concert
“New England has a rich musical legacy, in so many musical styles,” commented the ensemble’s conductor, Dr. Robert Franzblau. “From classical to patriotic to popular music, our region has a lot to boast about. Our concert aims to take everyone on a family-friendly virtual voyage to places all around New England, from the American Revolution into the future. The spacious atrium at the Marriott is an ideal setting for a Sunday evening concert, regardless of the weather – and you’ll feel good about directly benefiting a very worthy cause.”
About the MLK Community Center
Founded in 1922 and renamed in honor of Dr. King in 1968, the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Center is a central service provider for at-risk individuals, families, and seniors in Newport County. An independent nonprofit, the MLK Community Center fights hunger, promotes health, educates young and school-aged kids, supports families, and engages seniors. Over the past 100 years, the MLK Community Center has grown in response to community need and become a multi-service agency providing a wide variety of human services and enrichment activities to meet the diverse needs of the residents of Newport County.
About the Rhode Island Wind Ensemble
Founded in 1969, the Rhode Island Wind Ensemble (RIWE) is a modern wind band of fifty skilled volunteer musicians of all ages and from all walks of life, who believe that live music helps build community. Their mission is to provide audiences of diverse ages and cultural backgrounds access to live music of the highest quality, faithfully presenting the best in traditional wind band repertoire alongside music of underrepresented and historically disenfranchised communities.
In response to changing needs, RIWE has recently expanded its scope beyond concert presentation to include public-school-based community service initiatives, including a long-term partnership with the Music Pathways Program at Mount Pleasant High School in Providence, and the Band Instrument Renewal Drive, which pays for the cleaning and repair of donated used band instruments which are then redistributed to public school music programs in the greater Providence area where families cannot afford to purchase or rent an instrument.
