A Fabric of Sound is the second iteration of a weeks-long project led by Daniel Arite that uses audio collage to explore the dynamics of musical innovation, multi-track recording, and successful collaborations. This year's collaborators are:
• Classical and jazz bassist Paul DeFiglia
• Carlos Duran, a versatile percussionist with experience in jazz, rock, Latin, and African rhythms
• Americana/soul artist Meg Gehman
• Award-winning fiddler, singer, and songwriter Jenny Leigh Obert; and
• Thandiwe Shiphrah, a sound poet whose work explores the musicality of language
Each artist will perform in a solo showcase and in the finale, an ensemble performance of a collaborative work that was recorded during the project. A discussion about the creative process will follow.
This project is funded in part by Metro Arts and is presented in partnership with Global Education Center.
DOORS OPEN at 7 PM, CONCERT BEGINS at 7:30
About Daniel Arite
Daniel Arite’s works for live performance and electronic media use an “audio collage” approach to layering sound and building flexible structures. A professional musician since the 1980’s, his repertoire draws from jazz, classical, and world music. Over the past two decades, Daniel has been exploring the creative potential of audio collage by employing the practice in collaborations with a diverse group of instrumentalists, vocalists, poets, and spoken word artists. His compositions have been featured in venues around the United States and broadcast on radio and public television.
