A Call to Sing!!
Greetings, we are thrilled to present you with a unique opportunity to join the City Baptist Jubilee Choir Union “Special.” This is not just a choir but a distinguished institution with a rich history. It was conceived in 1996 by Deacon Odell Bookert from Temple Zion Baptist Church and Deacon Washington Sumter, Jr. from New Hope Baptist Church. It was their vision to create a chorus of choir members who not only sang but also gathered together for fellowship. This dream led to a unified choir with members from several local churches in Columbia. Their specific goal was to teach shape notes, a tradition slowly being phased out. Their efforts were rewarded with the formation of the City Baptist Jubilee Choir Union “Special.”
We are deeply concerned about the gradual decline of 'Shape Note' and Jubilee singing, a 'dying art' that is being phased out due to our collective failure to embrace and promote our cultural legacy. It is crucial that we act now to preserve this important tradition. The time to act is now, and we need your help to do so. Your involvement could make a significant difference in the preservation of this unique cultural heritage.
We will hold a rehearsal on Saturday, August 17th, at 1:30 p.m. at Temple Zion Baptist Church. We are preparing for a couple of invitations, and we invite you to join us.
We are truly grateful for your potential interest in joining the Special Choir. Your willingness to be a part of this important cause is deeply appreciated. Rehearsals will resume on Saturday, October 12, 2024, at 2:30 p.m. at Temple Zion Church. We look forward to welcoming you.
