60 Years Later: Legacies of the Free Speech Movement

Launched at UC Berkeley in 1964, The Free Speech Movement was pivotal in codifying the freedom of expression for university students.
Berkeley Law’s Professor Richard Buxbaum was part of the defense counsel in the criminal proceedings against the 773 members of the Free Speech Movement. He later represented several campus organizations in cases arising out of Vietnam War protests, and served as defense counsel in proceedings following the Third World Liberation strikes, which led to the development of affirmative action for student admissions.
Adam Hochschild, a noted author and UC Berkeley Journalism lecturer, will speak in conversation with Professor Buxbaum about the remarkable path that led him to his defense of the Free Speech Movement, and other catalytic student-powered activism.
Brian Nguyen, the first awardee of the Richard Buxbaum Global Justice Fellowship, will introduce the conversation. Nguyen currently works with the Human Rights Center as an investigator and open source investigations training manager.
