The YWCA Berkeley/Oakland has assembled a dynamic quartet of award-winning authors—all of them local—in a day of conversation about their writing journeys and how some of their most beloved works came to be. This year’s authors are Ingrid Rojas Contreras (The Man Who Could Move Clouds, a Pulitzer Prize finalist), Dorothy Lazard (What You Don’t Know Will Make a Whole New World), national bestselling author Gail Tsukiyama (The Brightest Star, The Samurai’s Garden), and Independent Press winner Irene Sardanis (Connections, Out of the Bronx). Book signings and a three-course lunch are included. This event is wheelchair accessible. Please consider sponsoring a scholarship to help local young women attend this inspiring day!
The YWCA is proudly celebrating its 135th anniversary of providing community services and leadership training to young women in our community. With a mission of “Empowering Women, Eliminating Racism”, current programs focus on serving teens, domestic violence survivors, elders, and others facing social and economic stresses. Services include financial and digital literacy, job and college readiness, reproductive rights and healthcare access, English in Action for English learners, and Get Out the Vote.
