18th Century Woodworking Demonstration from Dan Lacroix

The John Brown House Museum, a division of the Rhode Island Historical Society, is excited to announce Saturdays in the 1700s, a recurring series bringing “Living Historians” to the museum to reenact and explain aspects of daily life in the 18th Century. Before the invention of power tools, crafting furniture was a labor intensive process. On Saturday, September 7, 10am – 4pm, meet 18th century joyner and planemaker Dan Lacroix at the John Brown House Museum who will bring this complex process to life. Through discussions and demonstrations of historical techniques, he will illustrate the detailed steps involved to recreate period furniture using authentic hand planes and other 18th century tools. Visitors can also explore the Rhode Island Historical Society’s new exhibit From Forest to Foyer: Rhode Island and the Mahogany Trade in the 18th Century which showcases furniture and related objects from the RIHS collections and brings to life aspects of author Jennifer Anderson’s book, Mahogany: The Costs of Luxury in Early America Admission to the John Brown House Museum will include this experience. The cost for each program is $10 per person, free for RIHS members, select discounts available. Get your tickets here now.
