In 'What's Left Out', his latest collection of short fiction, writer and emergency physician Jay Baruch often takes imaginative leaps to examine the logic-twisting reality facing health care professionals and their patients. In this sometimes otherworldly but not unfamiliar landscape, characters find absurdity and even cruelty when they expect reason and compassion. With an eye for detail, and humor, Dr. Baruch provides an unsparing ride through the hidden, ignored or not easily understood challenges facing healers and the ill, in a world where optimism is held with caution and people ration their dreams; where motivations are complicated and convoluted; where the "house"? of medicine is under renovation.
