Tremendously popular in their homeland and most widely known in the U.S. for their YouTube performance of "Obama for Change"? that went viral during the 2008 presidential election, Kenge Kenge has performed throughout the world and now brings their irresistible dance music to Philadelphia. With a name that means "fusion of small, exhilarating instruments,"? Kenge Kenge explores the origins of the Benga pop-music style, which is popular in Kenya the way rumba is in Congo or highlife is in Nigeria. This roots music from the JoLuo community of Western Kenya includes dense textures of rhythm and chant that are overlaid with an unusual assortment of self-made traditional instruments such as the Nyatiti lyre, Bul drums, Nyangile sound box, Ongeng'o metal rings, Asili flute and Oporo horn.
