Who doesn’t love chocolate? It is widely enjoyed and universally recognized, yet people know little about the origin and history of it. In Worcester, chocolate became an increasingly important commodity during the time of the Revolutionary War, as tea consumption plummeted. The Worcester Historical Museum in fact has primary documents showcasing how many shops made sure to stock their shelves with alternatives, as evidenced by the accounts kept at what was Stephen Salisbury’s general store. Later in the history of the city at department store Denholms the company Russell Stover Chocolates became popular. This talk will give the history of chocolate both in the broad sense and the more local connections to Worcester.
