A multimedia presentation, “Groton’s Forgotten Community,” October 27, Groton Center/COA, 2 to 4 PM
Groton, too, played a significant if smaller part in the religious fervor known as the Second Great Awakening that took hold of the country from the late 18th to the late 19th centuries. The Community, a group united by its members’ Abolitionist sentiments in the pre-Civil War years, and founded in Groton by Benjamin Hall, began as a secular movement that turned, for some members, into a belief in the second coming of Christ.
Peggy Sands, a freelance writer and editor from Connecticut, brings the Community and its role as an important bridge between Abolitionism, Millerism, Communitarianism, and the Utopian movement to light in her multidisciplinary presentation, “Groton’s Forgotten Community,” on Sunday, October 27 from 2 to 4 pm at the Groton Center, 163 West Main Street.
Peggy Sands comes to her fascination with the Community through her ancestry. She is the great-, great-granddaughter of Benjamin Hall’s third wife, Henrietta Hall, and the heirlooms she inherited--three volumes of Henrietta’s diary, Hall’s Bible, and other fragments—piqued her curiosity, inspiring her to weave the disparate threads of this untold story into whole cloth. Sands will share the fruits of her investigation, published in The Wisconsin Magazine in 1999, in her talk, hosted by the Groton History Center.
The public is cordially invited to attend Sands’s compelling presentation free of charge, thanks to the Groton Commissioners of Trust Funds, following a brief annual meeting at 2 pm.
