"Lost Lake Since 1920" on exhibit at the Boutwell House, during Grotonfest, Sept 27 11-2,

So much can happen in a century. Take East Groton, for instance. It enjoyed a development boom during the postwar prosperity of the 1920s, when a new wealthy working class responded to alluring ads in the Boston Globe describing a fashionable shoreline community. Not quite the truth, but city people bought lots on short money, put up prefab cottages, and relished summers of rustic simplicity until the Depression, when, as longtime Lost Lake resident Bob Collins put it, "the whole thing unraveled.” Today, Groton’s lakes region may well enjoy the most tightly woven community in town. Many residents share a century-long family connection to the place; others bring a fresh perspective to its unspoiled waterways, public beaches, and diverse bird and wildlife habitats. The volunteer, nonprofit Mountain Lakes Club safeguards the environmental integrity of the area. For a glimpse into East Groton’s transformation, stop by the Groton History Center’s Boutwell House during Grotonfest on Saturday, September 27, from 11 to 2, for the exhibit “Lost Lake Since 1920.” Take in the art and artifacts of the 1851 home of Governor George S. Boutwell, at 172 Main Street, partake in light refreshments, house tours, and garden strolls. “Lost Lake Since 1920,” free and open to all, draws on memorabilia from the late Earl Carter’s Myceum, another gem of East Groton. The GHC, at the Boutwell House, curates a rare collection including the Boutwell family papers, textiles, antique rolling stock, pewter, photographs, and much more. Office hours are Mondays and Thursdays, 10 to 3. Please call 978-448-0092 to make an appointment for genealogical or scholarly research, house tours, photoshoots, and private events.
