History Comes to Life at Groton's Boutwell House -- Worth All the Time You Have
History never grows old. Experience its fresh, revitalizing energy at the Groton History Center’s Open House on Saturday, August 17, from 11 am to 2 pm. Drop into the Boutwell House, home of one of the country’s most forward-thinking leaders, George S. Boutwell; in 1851, at 33, the youngest governor of Massachusetts.
An ardent abolitionist and advocate for African American suffrage, Boutwell went on to serve as a U.S. Representative instrumental in the crafting and passage of the 14th and 15th Constitutional Amendments. He played key roles in the Lincoln and Grant administrations. His presence and that of his family can be felt in their fascinating house-museum at 172 Main Street in the heart of downtown.
Furnished and decorated in period style, the house holds prize pieces of local history including pewter belonging to the original Groton Inn, paintings by the 19th-century Boston School artist and West Groton native, Edmund Tarbell, two vintage gowns on display, antique quilts, and more.
On the 17th, the GHC will dedicate a garden bench to the late Leroy Johnson (1928-2023) – an educator and leader in public safety initiatives, Groton’s Fire Chief for fifty years, and GHC Board president. A fitting tribute, given that his daughter, Karen Brackett, a professional gardener with a degree in Forestry, brings vision and knowledge to her care of the Boutwell House gardens.
