Edmund Tarbell Artist & Teacher: From West Groton to National Prominence

Hold onto your wallets and your car keys. You don’t have to travel to DC, Manhattan, or even the Boston Museum of Fine Arts to see a fine display of artwork by West Groton native Edmund C. Tarbell (1862 to 1935). The lush oil paintings, sketches, and studies (on loan from the Tarbell Charitable Trust) at the Groton History Center’s Boutwell House show off the style, breadth, and vision of this renowned 19th-century American Impressionist. In his lifetime, Edmund Tarbell was one of the illustrious Ten American Painters, a group formed in 1898 to exhibit their work together. Today his work belongs in the collections of major museums across the country. The GHC’s exhibition includes panels that beautifully illustrate the artist’s background and that of the Tarbell family (whose West Groton roots run deep). Edmund Tarbell Artist & Teacher: From West Groton to National Prominence, continues into early December, with five Open Houses at the Boutwell House, 172 Main Street, Groton, from 11 am to 2 pm on the following Saturdays: October 12, & 19; November 2, & 16; and December 7. All are invited free of charge (donations welcome) thanks to the generosity of the Groton and the Mass Cultural councils. The setting couldn’t be more fitting: the 1851 Boutwell House is furnished in the style of Edmund Tarbell’s lifetime, and filled with artifacts that reveal Groton’s historic role on the national stage. For information about upcoming GHC events, visit grotonhistory.org; grotonhistory.org/Facebook, or email [email protected]. (Universal access to the first floor and gardens.)
