"Behind the Scenes at the Boutwell House," Open House, Aug 16, 11-2, Boutwell House, Groton

“Behind the Scenes at the Boutwell House,” featuring photographs and storyboards relating the high points of this summer’s attic-clearing project, will be on view, along with “Toys from the Attic,” at the GHC’s Open House, at 172 Main Street, Groton, on Saturday, August 16, from 11 to 2. In more than a spring dusting, this past summer, thanks to a grant from the Town of Groton Community Preservation Committee, the Groton History Center has been removing the contents of its attic to temporary storage, assessing, and cataloging over 1,100 items, including books, textiles, China, furnishings, and collectibles. All in the interests of making important repairs to the attic, and determining how the GHC can best serve the public with exhibitions and research opportunities. Principally involved were two graduate student interns, Allison Hall and Megan Albertson, along with Executive Director Kara Fossey, Board President Richard Chilcoat, and long-time Board Member and Exhibitions Coordinator, Carolyn Perkins. Allison Hall, in her third year as GHC's collections intern, is finishing up her Master’s in Library Science at Simmons College in Boston, and Megan Albertson is entering her final year of graduate work at Trinity College, Dublin. Join us at the Boutwell House for this free and fascinating peek into the work of maintaining a historic venue dedicated to preserving and protecting the past. Tour the Boutwell House, beautifully furnished with American antiquities, and rich in stories worth telling, and enjoy a stroll along the garden’s gravel paths, with their dazzling views of Gibbet Hill. For more information about these and other 2025 events, visit www.grotonhistory.org or email [email protected]. Office hours are Mondays and Thursdays. Please call 978-448-0092 to make an appointment or to schedule a photoshoot in the garden.
