All are invited to the Groton History Center's Open House, Boutwell House, Groton, Sunday, May 19

Footwork & Frolick Society Brings Parlor Games and Entertainments to the Groton History Center’s Open House, May 19, 11-2 Reimagine the spirit of the Edwardian Age. While we live against the backdrop of a town important to Colonial New England history, it’s good to remember folks had fun then too, in ways that make us all a bit nostalgic. Brush up on your social history with a visit to the 1851 Boutwell House at 172 Main Street, on Sunday, May 19 from 11 to 2. With GrotonFest in full swing that day, and Main Street in blossom, it’s the perfect time to take a fresh look around. In that spirit, the Footwork & Frolick Society, two of whose founding members, Catherine Dignam and her husband James Sabino, live in Groton, will demonstrate and teach guests (ages 8 and up, if so inclined) a repertoire of mid-nineteenth-century parlor games and entertainments. (Card games, stereoscopics, or Fox and Geese, anyone?) Among other activities, expect a casual game of croquet on the lawn, weather permitting. If browsing is more to your taste, the Boutwell House offers much to admire and study, including three Impressionist paintings by the world-renowned West Groton native Edmund Tarbell (1862-1938) and an exhibition profiling ten individuals whose lives changed the town. Then stroll Georgiana’s Garden with its exquisite views of Gibbet Hill, and sit awhile on benches provided for rest and contemplation. All are welcome free of charge to the Groton History Center’s Open House on May 19. This and all GHC programs are free and open to the public, thanks to the Groton Commissioners of Trust Funds, grants, and corporate and private donations. In addition, this event is part of Freedom's Way National Heritage Area's "Hidden Treasures" program. Regular GHC visiting hours are Monday and Thursday, 10 to 3. To schedule a visit, or for more information email [email protected], visit grotonhistory.org; grotonhistory.org/Facebook, or call 978-448-0092. (Universal access to the first floor and garden walkways.)
