The Creator of Social Security: First Female Labor Secretary Frances Perkins

She was a confidante of FDR, the first female US Cabinet Secretary, and object of admiration and contempt from her male contemporaries. Frances Perkins dedicated her career to championing exploited working men, women, and children and providing a financial safety net for retirees. She pushed through legislation that reduced crushing work-week hours,, implemented child-labor reform, and mandated safe, sanitary workplaces. Frances Perkins created Social Security. The list of her contributions is lengthy. Celebrate Women’s History Month, as Frances escorts you through her personal and professional trials and triumphs as a politician, wife, mother, (and suffragette). Discover her secrets to building alliances and staring down bullies to help make government an ally for working adults, children, and retirees. Janet Parnes of Historical Portrayals by Lady J, Millis will portray Miss Perkins. This program is supported in part by a grant from the Billerica Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Mass Cultural Council, a state agency.
