The East Quabbin Land Trust is hosting a Tree ID Walk on Saturday, October 12th, from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. Doug Hutcheson, South Quabbin Forester at DCR's Division of Watershed Protection will lead this family-friendly walk at Mandell Hill Preserve in Hardwick (Gilbertville). Mr. Hutcheson is responsible for forest management activities in Belchertown, Hardwick, and Ware and has more than 15 years of forestry experience in Massachusetts. Mr. Hutcheson will show participants how to identify over 25 tree and shrub species, such as spicebush, hawthorn, and American chestnut, based on a combination of leaves, branching pattern, bark, and habitat. Participants will also be able to see the impacts of drought and the emerald ash borer on forest health.
The 1.5-mile loop trail walk will depart from the Mandell Hill Preserve parking area, located at 660 Barre Rd., Hardwick (Gilbertville) at 2:00 p.m. Walkers will be treated to sweeping views of fall foliage in the Ware River Valley and Mt. Wachusett. Cider, doughnuts and other treats will be available afterward at the East Quabbin Land Trust's office just up the road. Please send your RSVP to [email protected].
