Philadelphia is the largest poor city in America with nearly a quarter of residents living at or below the poverty level, according to The Economy League. Many of these families will not be able to afford new clothes for their children or even food, let alone purchase their own home. Yet, owning your own home continues to be the most important way that families build wealth in America and, access to wealth has not been equally shared among all citizens. The wealth gap among black and white families is wider today than it was in 1960, and while there have been many factors that led to this disparity, lack of awareness and access still keep many families of color from realizing the wealth that others enjoy.
The RiseUp Fund, a 501C3 non-profit and HUD housing counseling agency, is hosting a FREE Financial Wellness Fair on May 11 from 10AM - 2PM at the Dornsife Center for Neighborhood Partnerships in Powelton Village. Attendees will learn about credit/restoring credit, choosing an appropriate credit card, saving for large items, retirement plans, stocks & bonds, and buying a home. Qualified attendees can also apply for one of the RiseUp non-repayable $5000 grants toward closing costs which will be awarded to a qualified applicant at the event.
The day will begin at 10am with light refreshments and a kick off by Philadelphia City Councilmember, Jamie Gauthier, before moving on to various sessions regarding financial topics ranging from repairing/restoring credit; all about mortgages and refinancing; saving for large purchases like home renovation, college, or a vacation; how much money one should save for retirement; making sense out of investments like stocks and bonds; leaving a financial legacy for your children, and more.
