Now in its 91st season, Chapel Street Players continues an exciting chapter with the second season at its brand-new theater. The move marked a major milestone for one of Newark’s longest-running community theaters, setting the stage for bold productions, innovative storytelling, and an enhanced experience for audiences.
Chapel Street Players opens its fall lineup with the Pulitzer Prize-winning August: Osage County (Sept. 19–21, 25–27), a darkly comic tale of a wildly dysfunctional family reunion that unravels in explosive fashion. Written by Tracy Letts, this modern American classic offers a raw and unflinching look at family, love, betrayal, and survival.
A missing father, a pill-popping mother, and three sisters harboring dubious little secrets. When the large Weston family unexpectedly reunites after Dad disappears, their Oklahoma homestead explodes in a maelstrom of repressed truths and unsettling mysteries. Mix in Violet, the drugged-up, scathingly acidic matriarch, and you’ve got a major play that unflinchingly—and uproariously—exposes the dark side of the Midwestern American family.
“August: Osage County is not for the faint of heart — it’s sharp, darkly funny, and relentlessly honest,” said Director Marsha Amato Greenspan. “We’ve taken full advantage of CSP’s new space to deliver an immersive, electric experience that will keep audiences talking long after the curtain falls.”
Acclaimed Broadway Production
The play premiered on Broadway in 2007 and quickly became a critical and commercial success. Among its many accolades:
2008 Pulitzer Prize for Drama
2008 Tony Award® for Best Play
2008 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Play
The production was later adapted into the 2013 feature film starring Meryl Streep, Julia Roberts, Benedict Cumberbatch, and an ensemble cast. The film went on to earn Oscar nominations for Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress.
