"The Language of Color" by Marthe McGrath
This November, Reston Art Gallery & Studios is proud to present The Language of Color, a vibrant new solo exhibition by local artist Marthe McGrath, on view from November 1 through 30, 2025. A public reception will be held on Sunday, November 9, from 2:00 to 4:00 PM, featuring live music by Andrew Weed.
In The Language of Color, McGrath explores emotion and intuition through dynamic compositions of layered media. Her work, influenced by abstract expressionism and a background in rug design, combines bold color palettes with rich textures and patterns. The result is a visual experience that transcends traditional representation.
“I don’t paint to represent reality; I paint to evoke it,” says McGrath. “My canvases are a testament to the power of intuition.” Her artistic process is physical and immersive—she often moves between wall and floor, using her entire body to interact with the canvas in what she describes as a "dance."
Drawing inspiration from global travels to places like Venice, India, Morocco, and China, McGrath’s work reflects a vibrant fusion of cultural influences and a celebration of diversity. Each painting invites viewers into a world of movement, memory, and feeling—an invitation to experience art as a universal language.
Rooted in both spontaneity and craftsmanship, McGrath’s paintings are as much about the act of creation as they are about the final result. Her intuitive process allows color and form to emerge organically, often leading to unexpected and joyful discoveries.
