Arlington County was plagued by crime and corruption. Armed with a shotgun and accompanied by an axe-wielding posse, Crandal Mackey, the commonwealth’s attorney raided saloons and broke up gambling houses and bordellos. Mackey had shut down an infamous racetrack and politicians on the take in the county’s political machine. Yet, in 1915 he mysteriously withdrew his bid for another term. Author Michael Lee Pope uncovers the little-known story of one man’s battle to rid the county of vice and violent crime. This event is FREE and you can attend via Zoom or in-person.
