David Martosko will give a presentation about documents he found in his independent research, which establish uncomfortable facts about the town of Burke's historical namesake. The worst of the documentation shows that Silas Burke oversaw slave auctions while he was a Fairfax County judge and a school commissioner
Q&A will follow the presentation, and then an open session for attendees to share their views.
This and other documents to support these disturbing findings are on the website www.FentonProject.org.
One proposal, driven by conscience, would rename Burke to "Fenton," to honor the first of many children whom Silas Burke bought. He paid $206 for Fenton in 1826, when the boy was likely 6 years old.
This meeting is open to everyone, whether or not they agree with the Fenton Project proposal. Mr. Martosko has lived in Burke for 20 years and raised children there.
