SITTING STILL Preview and Reception
The Cultural Landscape Foundation (TCLF) is proud to present an exclusive preview of the documentary SITTING STILL, featuring renowned landscape architect, National Medal of Arts recipient (2012), and former TCLF Board Member Laurie Olin, before its premier broadcast on PBS. The event at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Library is being held in conjunction with the ASLA Conference on Landscape Architecture. After the screening, there will be an engaging discussion with filmmaker Gina Angelone and Laurie Olin. The discussion will be followed by a reception held on the Mies van der Rohe-designed Library's rooftop transformed by Oehme van Sweden in 2020.
The event follows TCLF's daylong annual excursion to Oak Spring, the famed estate of Rachel Lambert "Bunny" Mellon, on Friday, October 4. Please note that both the excursion and the reception are ticketed separately.
About SITTING STILL
SITTING STILL captures the compelling world view of Laurie Olin, a gregarious, immensely knowledgeable, endlessly curious, and irreverent urban visionary whose humanist approach to design has helped define the modern-day city. Olin’s life story of growing up in Alaska on the edge of the American frontier, living abroad and challenging belief systems around designing in nature, and his lifelong work transforming environments for social good become the launching pad for exploring critical themes around the sociology of public spaces and how they directly impact our human experience.
The film gives voice to the environmental and social concerns that have driven Olin's vision for more 50 years and affected our collective humanity like no other moment in history. SITTING STILL also includes interviews with architects Frank Gehry and Billie Tsien, and esteemed landscape architect and artist, Walter Hood, among others.

The Martin Luther King, Jr. Library features two expansive green roofs spanning more 26,000 square feet. Designed by Oehme, van Sweden (OvS), these spaces showcase a variety of garden types, including a "Native Pollinator Garden," "Garden of the Senses," and "Seasonal Viewing Garden." Additionally, the drought-tolerant sedum plantings not only capture stormwater and mitigate the heat island effect but also provide a captivating sight visible from the surrounding office buildings.
