The Untold Stories of Lee-Fendall House Residents and Their Resting Places
Built in 1785 by Philip Richard Fendall I, the Lee-Fendall House has been home to many influential families whose lives and legacies have significantly shaped Alexandria's history. This lecture will delve into the lesser-known stories of the Fendalls, Lees, Cazenoves, Flemings, Downhams, and others who resided in this storied house. Discover their contributions to early American history, their experiences during the Civil War, and their final resting places.
This lecture, illustrated with rare photographs and documents, offers a unique opportunity to connect Alexandria's past with its present, highlighting the enduring impact of these historical figures on our community today.
David Heiby is a dedicated public historian and preservationist whose passion for uncovering and sharing Alexandria's rich heritage has made him an invaluable asset to the city's historical community. His focus on the city's historic cemeteries and their connections to prominent local landmarks, particularly the Lee-Fendall House, further solidifies his position as a key figure in Alexandria's historical narrative. As a Board Member of the Alexandria Historical Society and the Lee-Fendall House Museum, David brings a profound understanding of the city's rich past to every tour he leads. His expertise in Alexandria's cemeteries is exemplified in his role as the Superintendent of the Presbyterian Cemetery in the Wilkes Street Complex, a position he has held for over a decade after being "called" by the cemetery board, which are members of his church, the Old Presbyterian Meeting House. David owns and operates Gravestone Stories, a platform for sharing his research and true stories about Alexandria's past residents.
