The Duskwhales, ViRG, & Starting Early @ Jammin' Java
Local indie rock band The Duskwhales are reuniting for their first live performance in four years, following the departure of lead singer Seth Flynn to the Seattle area in September 2021. The band will make their hometown return to the stage on Saturday August 30th at Jammin’ Java in Vienna, VA alongside fellow DMV locals ViRG and Starting Early. Doors open at 7pm with the show kicking off at 8pm.
Originally formed in Manassas, VA in 2010, The Duskwhales are composed of Seth Flynn (guitar/vocals), Brian Majewski (keys/vocals), and Chris Baker (drums/vocals). The trio’s sound is reminiscent of classic artists such as The Beatles and Queen featuring lush vocal harmonies and unpredictable arrangements. Beyond their retro roots, The Duskwhales have crafted a sophisticated style of their own both in studio and on stage. They have supported national acts including Car Seat Headrest, Killer Queen, Frankie Cosmos, and Jesse McCartney, as well as performed to packed audiences across the East Coast. Their latest album Strawflower Lane was released in August 2024 and praised by Atwood Magazine for its “dynamic energy, colorful lyricism, and catchy, charming melodicism.”
ViRG is a synth-based indie rock band from Virginia formed by Piano Whitman. ViRG is centered around femininity and freedom while highlighting the whiplash of an unstable lifestyle, guilt, and the devastation of love. Whitman’s commanding voice is reinforced by intricate, lush synthesizers and strong rhythms produced by both drum-machines and acoustic percussion. Fans of both straight ahead indie-pop songwriting or the moody tech excursions of ‘Kid A’ will find something to enjoy in ViRG’s repertoire.
Starting Early is a rock trio made up of brothers Rory and Declan O’Donnell on guitars, along with Paul Mosimann on percussion. Filed under the nebulous genre of indie-rock, Starting Early has a sound that is unpretentiously fresh. Having cut their teeth by singing Beatle harmonies and instrumentally recreating the sounds of Cream and Led Zeppelin, the band injects a vintage vibe into their exciting and plucky songwriting. Hello was released in late 2023 and is the band’s first album release.
