Double Bill: Colonialism, Literature and Resistance: A Radical Duet & On the Traces of “Cruel City”

A Radical Duet An imagined meeting in post-war London brings together Nigerian activist Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti and Caribbean intellectual Sylvia Wynter as they conceive a revolutionary play. Blending history, performance, and speculative storytelling, the film explores anti-colonial thought, Black internationalism, and the power of artistic collaboration in shaping liberation movements across Africa and the Caribbean. On the Traces of “Cruel City” Seventy years after the publication of Cruel City (Ville Cruelle), filmmakers Sarah Dauphiné Tchouatcha and Tamnou Koloko return to Mbalmayo, the Cameroonian town that inspired Mongo Beti's pioneering critique of colonial society. Through the experiences of two teenagers and conversations with Odile Tobner and others who knew the writer, the film explores the colonial economy, the cocoa trade, and the social realities that shaped Beti's work. Moving between literature, memory, and contemporary life, it reveals how the forces he denounced continue to resonate today. Winner of the Special Jury Prize at the Festival des Écrans Noirs.
