RACHMANINOFF: Symphony No. 2
Pianist Simone Dinnerstein joins the FSO to perform MOZART: Piano Concerto No. 23 in A Major, K. 488. Dinnerstein has a distinctive musical voice. The Washington Post has called her "an artist of strikingly original ideas and irrefutable integrity." She first came to wider public attention in 2007 through her recording of Bach’s Goldberg Variations, reflecting an aesthetic that was both deeply rooted in the score and profoundly idiosyncratic. She is, wrote The New York Times, "a unique voice in the forest of Bach interpretation."
Rachmaninoff's rapturous and romantic Symphony No. 2 was composed between October 1907 and April 1908. Today, this work remains known as one of the composer’s greatest achievements!
For compositional inspiration, composer Robert Carl draws frequently on memories of landscapes that have impressed him. This concert opens with the Regional Premiere of his recent work, White Heron, inspired by a visit to the Florida Keys. He says of his music, "If there is exhilaration or a gentle transcendence, then I've done my job." White Heron…is an "attractive feat of musical imagism." —Gramophone
