The Pieces-Stage Premiere
On Friday, September 19 (7:30–10:00 PM), Aloft Circus Arts will debut The Pieces at our Logan Square home — the first new professional production from Aloft in six years. This stage premiere marks the culmination of a vision Artistic Director Shayna Swanson has been developing for more than a decade.
About the Show
At its heart, The Pieces is a living metaphor for rebuilding in the face of upheaval. Using eight towering ladders as both physical apparatus and symbolic structures, the performers create shifting towers and bridges that are built, dismantled, and rebuilt again throughout the performance.
The ensemble’s daring acrobatics — climbing, balancing, and counterbalancing on these precarious constructions — evoke the fragility of the systems we all rely on, from personal relationships to communities and beyond. The work reflects on our shared experiences of instability, resilience, and renewal, asking: How do we move forward while still honoring what we’ve lost?
Why This Premiere Matters
The Pieces is Aloft’s first new large-scale show since 2019’s Brave Space, which toured internationally to acclaim. This premiere is your opportunity to be among the very first audiences to experience a bold new work of contemporary circus — one that blends striking physical risk with emotional depth in the uniquely intimate setting of Aloft’s historic Logan Square church.
