Book It For Books 10/5K & One-Mile Race
Book It For Books has something for everyone. For serious runners, there are 10K and 5K options -- along with a one-mile course for fun runners and walkers. The event will be fun filled for children and families, with a face-painting station and books for children to take home to keep. The RIF NOVA mascot -- Clifford the Big Red Dog -- will be there with hugs and cheers for the crowd, along with live music provided by School of Rock!
The event is staged biannually by Reading is Fundamental of Northern Virginia (RIF NOVA) -- an all-volunteer 501(3)c nonprofit, totally supported by our community! For over 50 years, RIF NOVA has provided hundreds of thousands of books to deserving children in the City of Alexandria and Arlington, Fairfax, and Prince William counties. All RIF NOVA-supported elementary schools are Title 1 schools, which means that the school has high numbers of low-income students. Each child served is able to choose at least one book to take home annually — important because children who choose their own books are three times more likely to be frequent readers. Children select books from a diverse array of multi-cultural/racial/character/thematic fiction and nonfiction options to take home to keep, building, over time, a home library -- a key tenet of reading success. The goal is to improve academic and lifelong achievement by encouraging an early and sustained love of reading – while addressing the alarming local (and national) childhood literacy crisis. At $4.00 per new book, RIF NOVA must raise $90,000 annually. Be part of the action to help -- as a sponsor, runner, or walker -- and provide needed books and literacy activity programming for more than 23,000 children right here in the Northern Virginia community!
