Three Oklahoma dance artists - Ari Christopher (Tulsa), Brandin Steffensen (Norman), and Julie Mulvihill (Oklahoma City) - will each perform solos in addition to one collaborative trio (2:00pm and 8:00pm). Between the performances, Maree ReMalia (Tulsa) facilitates movement workshops including a Gaga/people class (3:45pm/arrive 3:30pm) and an In Practice Session (6:00pm). Improvisation and spontaneous composition are threads that tie these local artists and the work they share together. The work of these local, professional movement artists reflects the potential of our state in establishing and fostering local dance as art, as well as challenging mainstream thinking about dance. Julie Mulvihill will present a movement performance practice titled Duet with Myself. This work is a practice of physically remembering movement from a lifetime of choreographed dances while reciting an original monologue about making dances. The result is a nostalgic, irreverent, humorous, and quirky juxtaposition of memory, aging, and the shifting landscape of dance creation. https://juliemulvihill.com Ari Christopher will present Replay, which she made in response to the death of a close family member. The work has developed since its first performances in 2017 to question presence, absence, and contrasts. The work comprises both choreography and spontaneous composition. Brandin Steffensen will present his adaptation of News (2006), which is one of many solos Deborah Hay choreographed as part of the “Solo Performance Commissioning Project” (2004-2012). The commission stipulates conditions for the adaptation to be created by each dance artist over a strict 3 month rehearsal process. News consists of many things: a bellowing introduction, a ditty, a single note of innocence, a cry, a recitation, a silent conversation. Hay’s work engages the dance artist in a dialectic, opening their capacity to be playful and present, serious and sublime and even virtuosic. @prostheticmind The final piece in the concert, Rounding, is a culmination and movement dialogue of the three performing artists. The title is a play on the musical/choreographic tool of a canon or round, and highlights perspectives of dance making by inviting the artists to layer, weave, deconstruct, reconstruct, and transform altogether within movement because of each other and in-the-moment creative actions. Spontaneous composition is an aspect of all three solo works but Rounding, as a trio, offers connection and perhaps relationship as the artists push and pull, reach and dive through performance and creation together. Between the performances, Maree ReMalia offers workshops working with improvisational tools and spontaneous composition. The workshops include a 1-hour Gaga/people Class and a 1.5-hour creative movement experience she titled In Practice Session: Play. Gaga is a movement practice pioneered by choreographer Ohad Naharin that provides a framework for discovering and strengthening your body and adding flexibility, stamina, and agility while lightening the senses and imagination; In Practice invites participants to dive into movement choices and creation. www.mareeremalia.com ****
