"How Coming to America Became a Crime" with Dan Anderson
Dan Anderson is a former public defender, former special magistrate in Tucson City Court, and now an attorney in private practice doing court-appointed criminal defense in Tucson Federal District Court, often representing immigrants.
Despite the "...huddled masses yearning to breathe free..." language on the Statue of Liberty, America has never really been a welcoming place for immigrants who looked or sounded or worshipped or cooked their food differently from those who were already here. This was (and still is) especially true if the newcomers were arriving in large numbers. We will look at the various ways the "problem" of unwanted immigrants has been dealt with over the centuries, everything from insulting and shunning to burning, beating, and banishing, as the American legal establishment evolved into the system of immigration crimes in effect today.
