Harambee! The Tucson Black Film Club presents “The 2023 TUCSON BLACK FILM FESTIVAL: Racial Dilemmas and Figuring it Out”
The Tucson Black Film Club is proud to present its annual film festival right in the middle of Harambee celebrations at the Dunbar Pavilion. This time we feature two notable productions by
director Spike Lee: the satirical comedy Bamboozled (2000) and Cannes Film Festival winner Jungle Fever (1991).
-Bamboozled 2000. A black media executive sarcastically proposes a demeaning show about Black people. The network loves the idea and the show becomes a hit. But the questions are what is the long-term effect and is it worth it? Early critical reviews were mixed, but the issues remain.
-Jungle Fever 1991. An interracial romance pushes a couple into situations and introspections they had not anticipated. There are no easy answers. Arguably, the topics still apply to today’s world. Cannes Film Festival winner among many other awards.
Watch a great film during the Harambee festival at the Dunbar Pavilion. These are screenings that will make you smile and work your mind. After each screening, the Black Film Club offers discussions and free popcorn. This program is co-sponsored by Africana Studies at the University of Arizona. There is no charge for attendance and the event is open to the public
