St. Michael & All Angels Episcopal Church, 602 N. Wilmot, announces return of the International Holiday Bazaar December 2, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and December 3, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. This is the first community-wide Bazaar the church has hosted since 2019.
Billed “Holiday Shopping with a Conscience” because socially committed non-profit groups receive free space to showcase their wares, the Bazaar offers an opportunity to purchase unusual holiday gifts from around the world and close to home. There are no commercial vendors.
On Saturday, Yoeme (Yaqui) traditional singers, led by internationally-known deer singer and educator Felipe Molina, perform at 11 a.m. “Children’s hour” activities and a sing-along with Bruce Phillips begin at 12:30 p.m. Tucson’s “Raging Grannies” put in a cameo appearance around 1:30. Later Saturday the Abya Yala dancers from Magdalena perform, starting around 2 p.m.
Folk / social protest icon Ted Warmbrand provides a finale on Sunday, beginning at 1 p.m.
La Indita Restaurant offers a tamale plate and tamales to go on Saturday, as well as other menu selections. They will donate profits to groups in Mexico. Baboquivari District of the Tohono O’odham Nation plans to sell fry bread and “Indian tacos.”
On Sunday ELFA Empowerment refugee support prepares Syrian barbecue plates for sale, with a vegetarian option. ELFA will also sell packaged Syrian sweets both days, a good gift choice.
St. Michael’s offers popular low-cost “recycled gifts and trinkets,” prices $1 to $3. A “Vintage and Collectible” table adds discounted fine items at $3 and up.
Latin American Committee arrives from Phoenix with a wide selection of gifts not available elsewhere, including handcrafted items from El Salvador. Among other nonprofit groups are African Education Fund, Mission Garden/Friends of Tucson’s Birthplace, Audubon Society, APSA, Artisans Beyond Borders-Bordando Esperanza, Humane Borders, Just Coffee, Salvavisión-Casa de Esperanza, Franciscan Sisters, Lutheran Social Ministries, Tucson Samaritans, and St. Michael’s Guatemala Project.
Parish artists and writers will have books and crafts on sale, including popular mystery titles set in Tucson and vicinity, and handcrafted ornaments. They donate part of their proceeds to help with Bazaar expenses.
Coordinator Ila Abernathy, St. Michael’s Social Action Committee, states the number of non-profits continues to grow. Because St. Michael’s does not gain financially, “We consider the Bazaar a gift to the community.”
“But it’s Tucson that makes the Bazaar, by supporting the non-profit groups.”
