Tucson Flute Club Annual Members' Recital

The Tucson Flute Club will present their annual Members' Recital on Sunday, May 5, at 2 p.m. at St. Mark's United Methodist Church (in the Sanctuary). The recital will feature some movements from Claude Bolling's Suite for Flute and Jazz Piano, some lovely French pieces, an alto flute solo and an alto flute trio, the quartet Skyline Flutes, and the Flute Loops, a group of about 10 flutists. The Southern Arizona Flute Orchestra, under the baton of Shirleen Lee, will perform familiar selections such as the overture to Candide and Londonderry Air, and something new, entitled Dancing Dessert Suite. The public is warmly invited. Admission is free, with donations appreciated. The instrumentation for the concert will include six sizes of flutes - piccolo, C flute, alto flute, bass flute, contrabass flute, and sub-contrabass flute - encompassing seven octaves and producing a surprising, richly textured sound. Tucson Flute Club was founded in 1970 by the late Philip Swanson, then professor of flute at UA. The membership includes both amateur and professional flutists, as well as those interested in the flute, including five of the original founding members. The objectives of this 501(c)3 organization are to enable flutists to meet for ensemble playing for their own enjoyment; to broaden the knowledge of flute literature by providing performing opportunities for members and guest artists; and to increase knowledge of the flute through lectures, discussions, and related activities. For more information see tucsonfluteclub.org.
