2027 HSL Properties Tucson Jazz Festival

The 2027 HSL Properties Tucson Jazz Festival hits the ground running Friday, Jan. 15, launching nine days of jazz with the debut of the new Downtown Jazz Hop. The Downtown Jazz Hop features four distinct ticketed concerts in one evening, with multiple sets at unique downtown venues, all within walking distance. Sets are scheduled so jazz lovers can move from venue to venue, experiencing diverse artists, sounds and spaces while exploring the many culinary and beverage offerings of downtown Tucson. “Rather than gathering everyone in one large concert hall, we designed the Downtown Jazz Hop to let festivalgoers create their own opening-night experience,” said Tucson Jazz Festival Executive Director Khris Dodge. “Catch a set, explore downtown Tucson, grab dinner or a drink, then hop to another concert. DOWNTOWN JAZZ HOP: OPENING NIGHT LINEUP The Century Room Beginning at 4:30 p.m., acclaimed saxophonists Vincent Herring and Eric Alexander bring the excitement of a classic jazz battle to the Century Room. Additional sets are scheduled for 6:30 and 8:30 p.m. The Grand Tucson Dynamic Mexican jazz singer Magos Herrera and her ensemble perform “Magos Herrera Presents: Antonio Carlos Jobim at 100” at The Grand. Sets are at 6:30 and 8:30 p.m. Don Martini’s Garden Guitarist and composer Anthony Wilson brings his Nonet, a nine-piece jazz ensemble, to Don Martini’s Garden, located behind Don Martini’s Bar. Sets are at 6:30 and 8:30 p.m. The Lounge at the Temple of Music and Art The festival’s first “Secret J@zz” performance features Tucson bassist Thøger Lund with Danish drummer and multi-instrumentalist Kresten Osgood in The Lounge at the Temple of Music and Art. Sets are at 6:30 and 8:30pm. The nine-day festival will feature more than 25 leading jazz artists from around the world, including Trombone Shorty, Diego Figueiredo, Rick Braun, Gunhild Carling, Melissa Aldana and many others. Special events throughout the festival include the all-day Downtown Jazz Fiesta on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, a special City of Gastronomy dinner, more than 30 local restaurants offering jazz-inspired food and drink specials, live jazz featuring local musicians, and more. And when the nine-day festival concludes, the music isn’t quite finished: legendary bassist Ron Carter returns to Tucson for a Special Encore Event on Jan. 28 at the Rialto Theatre. Additional festival information is available at https://tucsonjazzfestival.org and on the TJF app. HIGHLIGHTS TROMBONE SHORTY AT THE FOX TUCSON THEATRE Jan. 23 | Fox Tucson Theatre Internationally renowned Grammy-winning artist Trombone Shorty is one of the most recognizable ambassadors for New Orleans music working today. Born Troy Andrews, Shorty has spent his career carrying the torch for Crescent City culture while propelling it forward with ecstatic live performances and an unmistakable blend of rock, funk, soul, jazz, blues, hip-hop and Caribbean influences. Shorty made his first appearance at New Orleans’ iconic Jazz Fest at age 4, joining Bo Diddley onstage for an impromptu performance. By 6, he was leading his own brass band. His career has since taken him from the White House and Grammy Awards to Madison Square Garden, Coachella, Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza and the Super Bowl. He has performed and collaborated with artists ranging from Jeff Beck, the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Foo Fighters to Pharrell, Bruno Mars, Jon Batiste, Lenny Kravitz and Ringo Starr. For additional information visit https://tucsonjazzfestival.org LIVING LEGEND RON CARTER AT THE RIALTO THEATRE Jan. 28 | Rialto Theatre The music continues beyond the festival’s official nine-day run when bassist Ron Carter,one of jazz’s most prolific and influential artists, comes to the Rialto Theatre for a Special Encore Event on Jan. 28. Carter’s extraordinary career spans more than six decades and more than 2,200 recording credits. From 1963 to 1968, he was a member of the acclaimed Miles Davis Quintet, and his unmistakable sound can be heard on landmark recordings including “Speak No Evil,” “Maiden Voyage,” “Red Clay,” “Speak Like a Child,” “Nefertiti” and “Miles Smiles.” Throughout his career, Carter has recorded with an extraordinary range of artists, including Lena Horne, Bill Evans, B.B. King, Dexter Gordon, Wes Montgomery, Bobby Timmons, Eric Dolphy, Cannonball Adderley and Jaki Byard. Ticket prices varies per event.
