Insight Meditation Tucson to host Walk for Peace

Walk for Peace Tucson is a contemplative walking meditation held in silence, inviting participants to cultivate peace within themselves as they walk together in community. The event is inspired by the national Walk for Peace USA movement, in which Buddhist monks are currently walking more than 2,300 miles from Ft. Worth, TX to Washington, D.C. to promote peace, compassion and nonviolence. The Tucson event is intended to coincide with their arrival in the nation’s capital and the completion of their courageous four-month journey. The route is approximately 0.7 miles one way, beginning with a northbound walk on Alvernon Way, then turning west on Broadway Boulevard to Randolph Way. The contemplative stroll will follow the park’s wide asphalt pathway. Participants will walk in silence, either single-file or side by side, at a comfortable pace along a designated path at Randolph Park. Walkers are encouraged to reflect on qualities of kindness, compassion and peace as they move together. Participants may also carry a simple sign with their organization’s name or a message of peace and are invited to share the event through their social networks. “This walk offers a simple but powerful way to come together at a time when many people are feeling overwhelmed or disconnected,” said David Bornstein, IMT Dharma Leader. “Walking in silence allows us to unplug, slow down, and embody the peace we long to see in our troubled world.” “With this voluntary walk, we are planting the seeds of shared intention for peace within ourselves, our neighborhoods, and our city”, said Susmita Barua, member of the IMT community and primary organizer of the event.
