The Phantom of the Opera (1925)

At the Opera of Paris, a mysterious phantom (Lon Chaney) threatens famous lyric singer Carlotta (Virginia Pearson), forcing her to give up playing “Marguerite” in Faust and turn the coveted role over to young, unknown soprano Christine Daae (Mary Philbin). But when Christine meets the disfigured, masked phantom in the catacombs of the theatre, his true motives become clear. One of the most famous horror movies of all time, The Phantom of the Opera still feels viscerally unsettling and intriguingly bizarre at one hundred years old. Cinema’s own “Man of a Thousand Faces,” Lon Chaney, created (he did his own makeup) a character that will truly never die. And likewise, Tampa Theatre’s own Steven Ball – accompanied by renowned soprano Juliet Petrus – will bring Chaney’s character back to cinematic life with an original musical score, performed live on our Mighty Wurlitzer Theatre Organ, just as it would have been when the film first opened. Stick around after the screening for a post-show Film Talk with horror genre expert Christopher Novak, a University of Tampa lecturer who teaches courses in American Cinema, Media and Society, and Visual Literacy.
