The Conjuring (2013)
The Perron family, Roger and Carolyn and their five daughters, have barely moved into their picturesque farmhouse in Rhode Island when terrifying, unexplainable events begin to occur. And when there’s something strange in the neighborhood, who ya gonna call? Ed and Lorraine Warren, a real married team of demonologists and paranormal investigators, whose actual careers also inspired the story behind The Amityville Horror. The Warrens find a dark spirit that has attached itself to the Perron family, and now must prepare for the most dangerous demonic encounter of their lives.
Director James Wan, having proved he knew what horror audiences wanted with the Saw franchise of films, and more recently having found enormous success with a different horror/possession franchise starring Patrick Wilson — Insidious — turned to the real world for inspiration for his next project. Writers Chad and Carey Hayes and stars Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga all spent significant time speaking with Lorraine Wilson in order to portray her experiences authentically. And the result is an artfully told but petrifying movie about a family at their wits’ end, and the tireless advocates willing to risk their own lives to help them.
