Scooby-Doo (2002)
Scooby-Doo is the story of four young people and a talking Great Dane who drive around in a van and solve mysteries while apparently not having to go to school or work or anything. In this iteration, the Mystery Inc. gang — Fred (played here by Freddie Prinze, Jr.), Daphne (Sarah Michelle Gellar), Velma (Linda Cardellini) and Shaggy (Matthew Lillard), with Scoob voiced by Neil Fanning — have had an argument and split up (for real) before being reunited when an invitation arrives to solve the mystery of a demonic curse at a resort called Spooky Island.
Demons! Spirits! “Spooky” is right there in the name! Of course, Scooby-Doo is a fit for Halloween, as anybody who remembers those sheet-vinyl department store costumes can tell you. But this isn’t the goofy, under-drawn animation of the past. This is Scooby-Doo made anew, with motivated characters, a poignant story, tons of funny bits, and plenty of nostalgic references for the true Scooby stans out there. And it’s written by James Gunn! So it also serves as a reminder that your career path can be winding and unpredictable. Take heart, millennials!
