Halloween II (1981)
Halloween II makes the brilliant decision to open about four minutes before the previous movie ends; in essence, Michael Myers (the unstoppable slasher from the original) immediately resumes his rampage. Moving house to house through Haddonfield, he kills indiscriminately, pursued by the obsessive Dr. Loomis (Donald Pleasance) who leaves chaos in his wake as well. Loomis eventually realizes that Myers isn’t attacking randomly; he’s headed for the hospital, where Laurie (Jamie Lee Curtis) has been transported. Can they stop him in time? Can anyone stop him at all?
Nothing’s harder to react to than surprising and overwhelming success. It’s been said that nobody was very excited to make Halloween II (except the producer, naturally), having all moved on to other projects. Once they did, Carpenter went out of his way to say that this was the last of the Michael Myers/Shape movies, and the director of Halloween III conceived of that film as the first in an anthology series like The Twilight Zone. Well, they were both wrong. Audiences simply can’t get enough Michael Myers. And some stories just can’t seem to die.
