High school student Wendy Christensen is headed to an amusement park with about 90 minutes’ worth of her friends to celebrate their upcoming graduation. Should be fun! But alas, Wendy has had a premonition of the roller-coaster they are about to ride derailing and killing all of them. Her panicky attempt to convince the others not to get on saves a few of their lives, which is nice. But the ones who aren’t killed find themselves in a series of mortally dangerous situations, as death hounds them each in the order they would have perished.
Final Destination is one of those ideas that is too good not to make a ton of sequels about. People who happen to escape death are pursued to the grave by the fate they dodged? Yeah, obviously that’s great. Blumhouse just offered us a $1m development contract for typing that sentence. But the premise isn’t the only thing we’re here to celebrate; Final Destination 3 was released on DVD with a very special alternate-viewing method called Choose Their Fate. Throughout the movie, the viewer is faced with decision points, wherein by pressing buttons on the remote, you can change the course of the plot. Pairing it up on the same day with Clue seemed like a natural fit. They filmed not just different endings, but different beginnings and different middles too! Plus in a lot of ways, it’s the peak of the series’ execution on its idea. Here’s a fun experiment you can do at home. Find a friend that you know has seen more than one Final Destination movie. Now ask them whether they’ve seen Final Destination 3. More than half the time they’ll answer “is that the one with the roller coaster?” If instead they say “I don’t know,” tell them it’s the one with the roller coaster. They’ll remember now!
