Where would we be, where would movies be, if the people who made Blade didn’t take it seriously? Because almost nobody else did. Hollywood knew there was money to be made with movies from comic-book properties, but since Superman (1978) there had been at least five flops for every hit. Blade was originally concepted as a western starring Richard Roundtree (Shaft) as Blade. New Line was thinking it would be a spoof. They asked whether Blade could be white. The first cut was a disaster. Blade simply shouldn’t have worked. But the insistence of writer David Goyer and the passionate intensity of Wesley Snipes rescued it from mediocrity and elevated it to dark, thrilling action-fantasy.
Before the screening, Film Historian Rob Kelly will provide a brief introduction to the film.
