FILM SYNOPSIS: 2h 1m / R / Drama
The Last Black Man in San Francisco, the 2019 directorial debut of Joe Talbot, is the story of two friends living in SF, Jimmie and Mont. More than anything they want to reclaim the house Jimmie grew up in, a Victorian in the Fillmore District that his grandfather (Danny Glover) built. But that’s not easy. Houses mean money, and legal requirements, and outside support, and Jimmie (Jimmie Fails, Nickel Boys) and Mont (Jonathan Majors, Lovecraft Country) can’t easily access any of those. And as much as they want to consider San Francisco home, it’s unclear whether San Francisco wants them back.
Full of breathtaking composition and a tender, affectionate embrace of its characters, it’s a heartfelt tribute to one of the world’s great cities — and a warning that cities, like all living things, die if they’re not nurtured.
