Five years after Freddy Krueger is defeated, a new family has moved into the house on Elm Street. And wouldn’t you know it, before long, the kids are having vivid nightmares about a certain dead child murderer. But this time, Freddy won’t just be in the dream world; he’s coming for you in the real world, too ...
In many of the big horror properties, the second film offers a better sense of where the series is headed than the first. Friday the 13th Part 2 brings Jason to the fore; Halloween 2 introduces the family element; Evil Dead 2 allows itself to be the comedy it always wanted to be. And A Nightmare on Elm Street 2 gives us a Freddy that’s weirder, more chatty, and much harder to get rid of. It also introduces a strong homoerotic reading to the series: lead Jesse Walsh (Mark Patton) is caught by his gym coach in a gay bar. The movie can be read as an exploration of the anxiety and repression of teenage sex and sexuality, and if that idea intrigues you, we’d direct you to the documentary Scream, Queen! My Nightmare on Elm Street (also playing at Tampa Theatre), which follows Mark Patton through his experiences with the legacy of the film.
