Exhibition: White Birds & Black Ink by Jillian Holladay

Jillian Holladay loves the birds that wander through her neighborhood. She sees them on the docks, beaches, ponds, and estuaries of Pinellas County. “I am especially fascinated by the white birds, so uniform in color but different in shape, size, and color of their beaks. They are often found together, the Great Egret, Snowy Egret, and the Wood Stork so alike and so different”. In December of 2024 Jillian went on a local safari to photograph many of the birds depicted in ink and watercolor, seen in her exhibition,” White Birds & Black Ink”. Most of her images start off in ink using a painstaking method called stippling. These drawings are then the basis for watercolor works. Inspired by her upbringing along California’s coast, Jillian’s artistic exploration has evolved since she relocated to Florida’s west coast. Her artwork reflects the allure of the ocean, featuring enchanting sea creatures such as crabs and starfish, as well as the graceful presence of shorebirds. Jillian's artistic expression is not without its challenges. Living with Parkinson's disease, she faces daily tremors that add an element of unpredictability to her creative process. Jillian Holladay’s show can be seen at St. Pete ArtWorks Gallery February 4 through February 23 during regular gallery hours. The reception is scheduled for St. Pete’s Second Saturday Art Walk February 8 from 5 to 9 pm with live music by folk-rock troubadour Evan French starting at 6 pm. The reception features food, drink, and the art of over 30 additional artists. This exhibition is produced with the support of Creative Pinellas and Pinellas County.
